Patrice O’Neal, Elephant in the Room

Elephant in the Room is a standup comedy special, shot in 2011 for Comedy Central, featuring late comedian Patrice O’Neal. To be honest, I wrote this piece just because I’m such a fan of Patrice’s and want as many people as possible to see this special.

This is one of my favourite standup specials. It’s littered with Patrice’s quirky style of crowdwork that he often uses as segways between bits. He really controls the pace well, at times producing a laugh a minute and at other times, using pauses and tone changes to really make the audience home in on him. On this special, he talks about how to determine the true value of someone, spelling, what’s considered inappropriate, animal rights, sex, women and other topics.

Something eery about this special is the way that Patrice references the fact he has diabetes (A disease that would be a factor in his death) and how he’s ‘finished’ and ‘a dinosaur’ in an almost prophetic way. Just months after shooting this special, Patrice sadly died at 41. I won’t say much more about this special, but watch it. This is a hilarious special that’s definitely worth an hour and change, of your life.
