TED Talk – Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly Be Passionate, Be Courageous, Be Your Best

TED Talks are short talks, given by people usually within the Technology, Education or Design  industries, in some sort of way and this particular talk is given by politician and former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, former astronaut, Mark Kelly. Just your average couple then…

In January 2011, Gabby Giffords was holding a regular (For a politican, anyway) public meeting with her constituents until she was shot, point-blank, in the head. The attack by a lone gunman sadly killed 6 other people and representative Giffords was rushed to hospital, placed in an induced coma and wasn’t expected to survive.

Fast forward to 2014 and Gabby Giffords is up, on stage, giving a talk with her husband that’s being recorded and will be watched hundreds of thousands of times. Obviously, in horrendous shootings such as these, people don’t tend to get away from the experience scott-free and Giffords has been left in the position where she can’t vocalise her thoughts at the speed she’d like to and her husband now helps her with public engagements. Considering what she went through, I think this video is worth a watch, if for no other reason, than to see a remarkable recovery and attitude, from someone who was, I’ll say it again, shot, point-blank, in the head.
